Requests for Public Records (FOIA)

Ascent Classical Academy is committed to transparency and compliance with the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Families and members of the public may request access to records maintained by the school that are subject to disclosure under state law.

How to Submit a Request

Requests must be submitted through the form below. To ensure the fastest response, please be as specific and clear as possible. Each request should include:

  • The subject matter (in detailed terms)
  • Date range for the search
  • Types of documents requested (emails, reports, letters, etc.)
  • Names of individuals involved in creating, receiving, or being the subject of the records
  • Any other information that will help us locate the correct records
  • Your contact information

A statement of purpose is optional but may help us process your request more efficiently.

Response Timeline

  • Requests for records less than two years old: determination within 10 business days; records provided within 30 calendar days.
  • Requests for records more than two years old: determination within 20 business days; records provided within 35 calendar days.

The request is considered “received” when the school opens your correspondence.

Fees

In accordance with FOIA, the school may charge reasonable fees for staff time, research, retrieval, redaction, and copies. Costs will not exceed actual expenses. If fulfilling your request is estimated to exceed 25 pages or one hour of staff time, you will receive advance notice with an estimate of charges. Payment is required before records are released.

Format of Records

Whenever possible, records will be provided electronically. If electronic delivery is not practical, the school will arrange a time during normal business hours for in-person inspection of the records.

Exempt Records

Certain records are not subject to disclosure under FOIA, including but not limited to:

  • Student academic or health records (other than your own student’s)
  • Personnel files and confidential employee information
  • Test questions or scoring keys
  • Confidential legal communications
  • Security and safety plans
  • Trade secrets or proprietary information
